Murder

  First mistake, you lost your temper,

And then picked up the knife;

It took but a single moment...

To snuff out the man's life.

The world's label, a murderer,

It's life without parole;

There are two broken families

Whose hearts will ne'er be whole.

Yes, it is true — you did the crime,

That you did not deny;

But what about the ones in court

Who hoped that you would die?

The Bible says that we can kill

Without a knife or gun;

Our words cutting and piercing -

The weapon we use — our tongue.

The words that we may choose to say,

And how they are spoken;

Can destroy a life, crush a soul,

Or leave a heart broken.

When we all stand before the Lord,

What will we hear that day,

"A knife, a gun - perhaps the tongue,

It's murder either way."

My friend, are you a murderer?

Put your weapon away;

Or if you must bite off your tongue,

But, please, do not delay.

You may not have used a gun or knife,

But know that assuredly;

With your words you've pierced a heart

And thought no one could see.

The Lord heard each word that you used

To break that heart in two;

So, judge not the one who used a gun

You're a murderer too.

Believer, the Word of God has much to say about the tongue, for the tongue is a small part of the body, but for its size it's the most powerful. When we allow the Lord to use (control) our tongue, it can bring life to one that is spiritually or emotionally dead. It can build up, encourage, bless, strengthen the one who is weak or lift the spirit of the downhearted.

The tongue can be used to do so much good but it can also be used to do tremendous evil. Cruel words from anyone, but especially someone we love, can pierce as deeply or deeper than a dagger. I honestly believe it has caused physical illness or even death due to stress, and sometimes even suicide due to severe depression. And yet no one goes to prison for a deadly tongue.

Some Christians don't even make an effort to control their tongue. Like the old saying, if it feels good do it; apparently it makes them feel big, superior, in control or important to say whatever they please to people. They get high on hurting others; but I believe it's actually a sickness and a total lack of self-control. Self-control is one of the fruits of the   Spirit and one guaranteed way of having it is to walk in the Spirit.

The Word of God says the tongue is an unruly evil that no man can tame. But we can give the Lord control of our tongue and then it will be used for good and as a blessing.

Read Proverbs Chapter 15 and focus on verses 1-4:    A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. 4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
